A Pattern Garden

Pattern 7: Borders

Our gardens are made distinct and separate by fencing or hedging. Whether man-made or living green, solid or nearly transparent, these boundaries outline our gardens, articulate property lines, create privacy and security. As lot sizes shrink and our society becomes more litigious, the demarcation provided by clear property lines is vital. Whether a thickly impenetrable yew hedge or a 4-foot woven screen separating apartment balconies, the impulse for definition and division is the same.

A front courtyard garden is both connected and separate from the street: The open latticework fence invites looking in and out, but its height and darkness create a barrier.
